What is Alt HAN?

Smart meters rely on a local network within your home to send data. This is known as the Home Area Network, or HAN.

The home area network (HAN) and its challenges

The Home Area Network (HAN) is the communication link that allows your smart electricity meter, gas meter, and In-Home Display (IHD) to talk to each other. This network typically uses a low-power wireless signal, similar to Wi-Fi, to transmit energy usage data. However, in some properties, this signal can struggle to reach all devices. Thick walls, basements, outbuildings, or simply a large distance between meters can disrupt the HAN, potentially leading to a non-functioning IHD or delayed data transmission. This issue affects over 700,000 households in Great Britain, preventing them from fully benefiting from smart metering.

Introducing the Alternative home area network

The Alternative HAN (Alt HAN) is a solution developed to overcome these connectivity challenges. It is an industry-wide initiative, not a proprietary technology, designed to extend the range and reliability of the HAN where standard smart meter technology falls short. The Alt HAN Company (Alt HAN Co) is a not-for-profit cooperative of energy suppliers responsible for developing and deploying these solutions, working collaboratively to ensure no customer is left behind in the smart meter rollout.

Why is Alt HAN needed for smart meters?

The national smart meter rollout in Great Britain aims to offer every home a smart meter, providing accurate readings and enabling advanced energy services. Alt HAN plays a vital role in achieving this goal.

Overcoming connectivity issues and signal strength

Many homes face specific structural hurdles that impede smart meter communication. These can include properties with meters located in basements, in external meter boxes, or in separate outbuildings, as well as multi-dwelling units like flats where meters might be concentrated in a communal meter room far from individual apartments. Without Alt HAN, these homes might struggle to maintain a consistent connection, potentially leading to estimated bills and a lack of real-time energy data. Alt HAN devices act as signal boosters, ensuring the communication hub connected to your electricity meter can reliably interact with your gas meter and IHD, even through physical barriers.

Supporting the national smart meter rollout

The smart meter rollout is a government-backed programme, regulated by Ofgem, to replace traditional meters with smart meters across Great Britain. The UK government aims for 100% smart meter coverage in domestic properties by 31 December 2030. Alt HAN is integral to this programme's success by expanding smart meter coverage to homes that would otherwise be excluded. By addressing these technical challenges, Alt HAN helps ensure that more households can access the benefits of smart metering, contributing to a more efficient and future-ready energy system for the entire country.

How Alt HAN works with your smart meter

Alt HAN solutions are designed to integrate seamlessly with your existing smart meter setup, extending its reach and ensuring consistent data flow.

Extending the reach of your smart meter's signal

During smart meter installation, connectivity is evaluated. If the signal between your smart meter, gas meter, and In-Home Display is weak, an Alt HAN device may be installed. These devices function much like a Wi-Fi booster, using powerline communication principles to extend the range of the smart meter's signal through your property's electrical wiring. This allows data to travel further and bypass obstructions like thick walls, ensuring all components of your smart metering system can communicate effectively.

What is a smart meter booster?

A smart meter booster, often an Alt HAN device, extends the communication range of your smart meter's HAN. It acts like a Wi-Fi extender for your energy devices, ensuring your electricity meter, gas meter, and In-Home Display can reliably exchange data, even in challenging property layouts.

The role of Alt HAN devices and the Alt HAN Co

Alt HAN devices can be installed to address connectivity issues. The Alt HAN Company offers four mixed-media devices, known as Bridges, that can be combined and configured into three distinct solutions to help establish smart metering HANs. These devices are designed for different installation scenarios to extend connectivity between smart metering devices. The Alt HAN Co oversees the development, procurement, and deployment of these solutions, ensuring they are available to all suppliers and customers who need them. Mass rollout of these devices has commenced, helping more customers access smart metering benefits.

Benefits of Alt HAN for consumers

A robust and reliable smart meter connection, enabled by Alt HAN, translates into tangible benefits for you and your home energy management.

Reliable data for accurate billing and energy insights

With Alt HAN ensuring consistent communication, your smart meter can send accurate, automatic readings to your energy supplier. This significantly reduces the need for estimated bills and manual meter readings, providing you with more precise billing and a clearer understanding of your energy consumption. Accurate data is the foundation for making informed decisions about your energy use, helping you identify areas where you can save.

Unlocking advanced tariffs and energy management tools

Improved smart meter connectivity, facilitated by Alt HAN, is crucial for accessing advanced tariffs such as time-of-use rates. These tariffs offer different prices for electricity at various times of the day, allowing you to save money by shifting your energy-intensive activities (like charging an electric vehicle or running appliances) to off-peak hours. Reliable data also empowers you to use energy management tools, often found in energy supplier apps, to track your usage in near real-time and optimise your consumption.

Empowering your home for a smarter energy future

Alt HAN isn't just about fixing a signal problem; it is about empowering you with greater control over your energy. By ensuring your smart meter functions optimally, it lays the groundwork for integrating smart home devices and making your home energy system more responsive and efficient. This capability transforms energy from a passive cost into an active area where you can make strategic choices.

The future of energy with Alt HAN

Alt HAN is a critical component for building a future-ready home energy system, enabling customers to adapt to new technologies and market opportunities.

Connecting smart appliances and electric vehicles

A reliable HAN, bolstered by Alt HAN, is essential for the seamless integration of smart appliances and electric vehicles (EVs) into your home energy ecosystem. Imagine your EV automatically charging when electricity is cheapest, or your smart washing machine running during off-peak hours. This level of automation and optimisation relies on consistent communication between your smart meter and connected devices, allowing you to maximise savings and minimise your carbon footprint.

Making a power play with abundant energy

Alt HAN helps ensure that all homes can participate in the evolving energy landscape. Consistent smart meter data, made possible by Alt HAN, is the foundation for unlocking financial benefits from dynamic tariffs and grid-balancing rewards. This shifts the balance of power into your hands, allowing you to make a "power play" by actively managing your energy consumption and even contributing to grid stability. It moves beyond simply "using less" to a future where you have "power to play with" - more control, more savings, and more capability to shape your energy future.
