An In-Home Display (IHD) is a small, portable screen that works with your smart meter to show you how much electricity and gas you are using, and what it is costing you, in near real-time. This immediate feedback helps you understand your household's energy habits and manage your bills more effectively.

An IHD is a digital device that connects wirelessly to your smart meter, providing a clear window into your energy consumption. It is designed to be portable, allowing you to place it conveniently within your home to easily access your energy data. Unlike the smart meter itself, which is fixed in place, the IHD is a separate unit you can move around.
Your smart meter is the core component of this system, measuring your energy usage and securely sending that information wirelessly to your IHD. This means you no longer need to submit manual meter readings, as the data is automatically sent to your energy supplier. Smart meters are part of a government-backed rollout in Great Britain, regulated by Ofgem, which ensures consumer protection and fair practices. You can learn more about how these devices work in our guide to what is a smart meter.
IHDs typically show a range of useful information to help you track your energy use:
Your IHD communicates directly with your smart meter to provide up-to-date information about your energy use. This connection is designed to be secure and efficient.
The IHD connects to your smart meter wirelessly, typically through a secure, low-power radio network known as a Home Area Network (HAN). This connection does not require your home Wi-Fi, making it independent of your internet service. The smart meter itself sends your energy usage data securely to your energy supplier through wireless or cellular networks. For more details, explore our article on the HAN explained.
The primary benefit of an IHD is its ability to show your energy usage in near real-time. This immediate feedback allows you to see the impact of turning appliances on or off, helping you understand which devices consume the most energy. For example, you can observe how quickly the numbers on your IHD rise when boiling a kettle or using an oven.
An IHD is a powerful tool for taking control of your energy consumption and, consequently, your energy bills.
By providing a constant stream of information, your IHD helps you identify patterns in your energy usage. You might notice peak usage times, such as when everyone is home in the evening, or discover how much energy appliances consume even when on standby. This visibility is crucial for pinpointing energy-intensive habits or appliances.
With clear data at your fingertips, you can make informed decisions about how and when you use energy. Understanding your usage against benchmarks can highlight opportunities for optimisation. For instance, the average UK home uses around 2,500 kWh of electricity per year and 9,500 kWh of gas per year1.
Your IHD provides immediate visibility of your energy use, acting as a foundational tool for empowered energy management. The Fuse app enhances this experience by offering deeper insights, greater control, and rewards for smart energy usage. While your IHD shows you the 'what' and 'how much', the Fuse app provides the 'why' and 'how to optimise', creating a seamless and empowering experience that gives you more power to play with your energy.
While IHDs are generally reliable, you might occasionally encounter issues. Many common problems can be resolved with simple troubleshooting steps.
If your IHD screen is blank, first ensure it is properly plugged into a power source. If it is on but not displaying data, check its proximity to your smart meter. Walls and distance can interfere with the signal, so try moving it closer, ideally within 10-15 metres of your smart meter. After repositioning, turn the IHD off, wait a minute, and then turn it back on to allow it to reconnect.
If your IHD shows a "connection lost" message or only displays data for one fuel type, it could be struggling to communicate with your meters. Try the repositioning and restart steps mentioned above. If the problem persists, contact your energy supplier for investigation. It's important to remember that if your IHD is not working, it does not necessarily mean your smart meter is not working; the meter might still be sending readings to your supplier. Your supplier may be able to fix connectivity issues remotely. However, they cannot promise resolution timelines for issues related to the HAN.
You can generally switch energy suppliers even if you have a smart meter. If you have a newer SMETS2 smart meter, your IHD should continue to work with your new supplier. Your new supplier will usually update your IHD with your new tariff rates and contact details. However, with older SMETS1 meters, the "smart" features, including your IHD's display, might temporarily stop working after a switch. In such cases, your new supplier can often enrol your meter into the national smart system to restore full functionality. If your IHD does not update with new tariff information within a few days of switching, contact your new supplier. For more information on switching, see our guide on how to switch energy supplier.
Your IHD is more than just a display; it is a tool that can help you become a more energy-efficient household.
Use your IHD to actively manage your energy. Identify your most energy-intensive appliances by observing your IHD when you turn them on and off. This can help you decide whether to use them less often, at different times, or consider more energy-efficient alternatives. Regularly reviewing your historical usage data can highlight areas for improvement and confirm the effectiveness of any changes you have made.
