Why manual EDMI meter readings can be essential

Smart meters are designed to remove the need for manual readings, but there are still important situations where knowing how to perform an EDMI meter reading yourself is essential. You may need a manual reading when moving house, switching suppliers, or resolving a billing dispute. Without this knowledge, you rely entirely on automated systems.

What is total active import and why is it vital?

EDMI electricity meters display multiple screens, but only one contains the figure your supplier uses for billing. This value is called the total active import, often signified by "IMPRT" displayed at the top left of the screen. It represents the total cumulative energy usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh) imported from the grid since installation.

When you submit a reading, your supplier subtracts your previous figure from the new one to calculate usage. If you record the wrong register, your bill will be inaccurate. Understanding and identifying this figure correctly is the foundation of accurate billing.

How to read your EDMI smart meter

Most EDMI meters have two buttons, often labelled with the return symbol (⮐) and "OK".

If you are a Fuse Energy customer, our app is designed to make manual submissions straightforward.

EDMI gas smart meter reading

EDMI gas meters follow a similar principle but display consumption in cubic metres or kWh. The gas meter only has a single main reading that represents cumulative usage. Press either button to wake the display and cycle until the main consumption figure appears. Record the digits before the decimal point. Gas meters do not display separate day and night rates unlike electricity meters.

EDMI meter troubleshooting

Misreadings often occur when customers confuse billing registers with non-billing screens. Always verify the code displayed alongside the number to confirm you are looking at the correct register.

Common reading mistakes to avoid:

The decimal rule

Most suppliers require only the whole number of kilowatt-hours. This means you should record all digits before the decimal point, including leading zeros if your supplier requires it. Digits after the decimal point represent fractions of a unit and are not normally required. The safest rule is to write down the entire number before the decimal and ignore the rest.

Rate 1 and rate 2 readings

If you are on a multi-rate tariff such as Economy 7, your meter will show two import readings. "Rate 1" typically refers to peak, daytime usage, while "Rate 2" usually refers to off-peak, nighttime usage, though this can vary and can be confirmed by your supplier. You must record both readings separately. Submitting only one will result in inaccurate billing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read my EDMI ES-10A meter?

Use the "OK" button to scroll through the display until you see the "IMPRT" figure. Record all digits before the decimal point. If you are on a dual-rate tariff, ensure you record readings for both rates.

What should I do if my meter is broken or faulty?

If you suspect your physical meter is broken, such as the display being blank or showing an obvious error code, you must contact your supplier immediately. They are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the meter and will arrange for an engineer to come and investigate and replace the unit if necessary.

Do I still need to submit readings if I switch to Fuse Energy?

In most smart meter homes, you shouldn't need to submit regular manual readings because data is collected automatically. If you have a non-smart meter, Fuse Energy makes the process straightforward and transparent by giving you multiple options to submit each month. The goal is fewer estimated bills and less administrative work for you.
