What is the Warm Home Discount scheme?

The WHD is a UK government scheme designed to provide financial relief to households struggling with energy bills, particularly during the colder months. It is a direct discount, not a cash payment, applied to your energy account.1

The energy bill discount explained

For winter 2026 to 2027, the WHD scheme offers a £150 discount off your electricity bill, or £150 added to your prepayment meter. This discount is typically applied between October and March. It is a credit that reduces the amount you owe your energy supplier, not a cash payment.

Who the scheme is designed to help

The scheme targets low-income households and vulnerable individuals who might struggle to afford their energy costs. It is a crucial support mechanism to ensure homes can stay warm without undue financial worry. The WHD operates across England, Scotland, and Wales, with specific eligibility criteria.

Warm Home Discount eligibility

Eligibility for the WHD depends on your circumstances and where you live.

Automatic eligibility

For winter 2026 to 2027, you are automatically eligible for the WHD if, on the qualifying day in August 2026, you meet three criteria:

  • You receive a qualifying benefit, such as Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), or Income Support.
  • Your name (or your partner's) is on the electricity bill.
  • Your energy supplier is part of the scheme.

If you are automatically eligible, you do not need to apply for the discount.

Park home residents

Park home residents who pay the site owner for electricity may qualify under the separate Park Home WHD scheme. This scheme requires an application and is for households with an income below £20,328 a year, or where someone receives a qualifying benefit.

Warm Home Discount eligibility checker

There is no single universal online checker for the WHD that covers all situations. For automatic eligibility, the government usually identifies you. For park home residents, you will need to apply directly. The UK government website provides an overview of the scheme and general eligibility.

Do I need to apply for the WHD if I'm automatically eligible?

No, if you are automatically eligible because you receive a qualifying benefit, you usually do not need to apply. The £150 discount for winter 2026 to 2027 will be applied automatically to your electricity bill.

How to receive your Warm Home Discount

The application process depends on your eligibility.

Automatic discount process

If you are automatically eligible because you receive a qualifying benefit, you typically do not need to apply. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) identifies eligible households. If you receive a letter confirming your eligibility, no further action is usually required from your side.

Applying for the park home Warm Home Discount

If you are a park home resident and believe you qualify for the Park Home WHD scheme, you will need to apply. Contact the scheme directly for details on how and when to apply.

Receiving your discount

The WHD is designed to provide timely support during the colder months. The £150 discount for winter 2026 to 2027 is typically applied to your electricity bill between October and March. The exact timing can vary depending on your energy supplier and when your eligibility is confirmed. It will appear as a credit on your bill, reducing the total amount you owe.

Warm Home Discount for prepayment meters

If you have a prepayment meter, the discount is not applied directly to a bill in the same way. Instead, your energy supplier will usually provide the £150 discount for winter 2026 to 2027 as a top-up voucher or credit. You will receive instructions on how to redeem this, often by taking it to a PayPoint or Post Office to add the credit to your meter.

What to do if you do not receive your discount

If you believe you are eligible for the WHD but have not received the discount by January, you should contact the WHD scheme helpline or your energy supplier directly. They can investigate your eligibility and the status of your discount.

Other support for energy bills

Beyond the WHD, several other government schemes and initiatives can help with energy costs.

Winter Fuel Payment

The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment to help older people with their heating costs. For winter 2026 to 2027, you are eligible if you were born before 28 June 1960. You could get between £100 and £300 to help pay your heating bills. This payment applies to households in England and Wales only; Scotland has its own equivalent. Most payments are made automatically between November and December.

From winter 2025/26 onwards, the payment is universal for everyone over State Pension age in England and Wales, but if your total taxable income is over £35,000 a year, HMRC will take the full amount back via your tax code or Self Assessment. You can opt out before the September deadline to avoid this recovery.

Cold Weather payment

You may get a Cold Weather Payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, 0°C or below for seven consecutive days. This is a one-off payment for each qualifying cold spell, for people already on certain benefits. Payments are made between 1 November and 31 March.
