# Which EV charger for your home

Selecting the right electric vehicle (EV) charger for your home can seem complicated. This guide simplifies the options, helping you make an informed decision that suits your driving habits, property, and budget.

## Understanding your EV charging needs

Before exploring charger models, assess your daily driving and vehicle requirements to ensure your choice aligns with your lifestyle.

### Daily driving habits and range requirements

Consider your typical daily mileage. A 7.4 kW home charger can add approximately 25 to 30 miles of range per hour, which is often sufficient for most UK daily commutes, replenishing consumed energy in a few hours. Even drivers covering higher mileage can typically restore their battery overnight within an eight-hour charging window using a 7.4 kW unit.

### Vehicle compatibility and connector types

Most modern EVs in the UK use a Type 2 connector for alternating current (AC) charging. Ensure the charger you select is compatible with your vehicle's charging port. While some chargers are tethered (with a cable permanently attached), untethered options allow you to use your vehicle's own charging cable, offering greater flexibility.

### Future-proofing your charger choice

Technology evolves rapidly. Opt for a smart charger that can receive over-the-air updates and integrate with future energy management systems, such as the Fuse Energy app, to optimise charging times with smart tariffs. This ensures your investment remains relevant and efficient as the energy landscape evolves.

## Types of home EV chargers

Home EV chargers primarily come in two power ratings in the UK, each suited to different needs.

### 7.4 kW (single-phase) chargers

The most common choice for UK homes, 7.4 kW chargers operate on a standard single-phase electricity supply. They are typically sufficient for overnight charging, fully replenishing most EV batteries within 6-8 hours. Installation is generally straightforward and less costly than higher-power options.

### 22 kW (three-phase) chargers

For faster charging, 22 kW chargers utilise a three-phase electricity supply. These are less common in residential properties, as most UK homes have a single-phase connection. Upgrading to a three-phase supply can be expensive and complex, often requiring significant electrical work and approval from your Distribution Network Operator (DNO). A 22 kW charger can charge an EV significantly faster than a 7.4 kW unit, making it ideal for those with high daily mileage or multiple EVs needing rapid top-ups.

## Key features of a smart EV charger

Modern EV chargers offer a range of smart features that enhance convenience, efficiency, and cost savings.

### Connectivity and app control

Smart chargers connect to your home Wi-Fi, allowing you to control and monitor charging via a smartphone app. This includes scheduling charging sessions, viewing charging history, and setting power limits.

### Dynamic load management

> **What is dynamic load management?**
>
> Dynamic load management is a smart charger feature that prevents your home's electrical supply from overloading. It automatically adjusts the EV charging rate in real-time, based on your household's overall energy consumption. This ensures safe operation, especially when multiple high-demand appliances are in use simultaneously.

This feature prevents overloading your home's electrical supply by dynamically adjusting the charging rate based on your household's real-time energy consumption. This is crucial for homes with multiple high-demand appliances.

### Integration with smart tariffs

Many smart chargers can integrate with energy tariffs that offer cheaper electricity during off-peak hours. By automatically charging when electricity is cheapest, you can significantly reduce your running costs. Fuse Energy's smart tariffs are designed to work seamlessly with compatible smart chargers, optimising your charging schedule for maximum savings.

## Installation considerations

Professional installation is essential for home EV chargers to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

### Electrical supply and Fuse capacity

Your home's electrical supply and main fuse capacity are critical. A 7.4 kW charger typically requires a minimum 32A Fuse, while a 22 kW charger demands a much higher capacity. An electrician will assess your existing setup and advise on any necessary upgrades, such as meter tail upgrades, which Fuse offers for £100 (or £170 if an isolator switch is also required).

### Charger location

Consider a location that is convenient for parking your EV, ideally close to your electricity meter. The installer will also check for suitable cable routes and ensure the location is safe and weather-protected.

### Professional installation

Always use a qualified and certified installer. Fuse Energy offers professional installation of the Easee One EV charger, ensuring a safe and compliant setup. Our installation service includes up to 15m of cabling, surge protection, and a 3-year warranty.

## OZEV grants for EV chargepoints

The UK government offers grants through the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) to help with the cost of installing EV chargepoints. It's crucial to understand the current eligibility criteria, as the schemes have evolved.

### Current OZEV grant schemes (until 31 March 2027)

There is no longer a generic grant for owner-occupiers in a house with private off-street parking. The current schemes target specific groups:

* **EV chargepoint grant for renters and flat owners:** Provides up to £500 towards installing a chargepoint. You must own and live in a flat, or rent any residential property, and have private off-street parking.
* **EV chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking:** Offers up to £500 for installing a chargepoint. You must own or rent the property, have only on-street parking, and be installing a cross-pavement solution (e.g., a charging gully).
* **Workplace charging scheme (WCS):** Up to £500 per socket, for up to 40 sockets, for eligible businesses, charities, and public sector organisations.
* **EV chargepoint grant for landlords:** Up to £500 per socket, for up to 200 sockets, for public sector organisations, registered social-housing providers, private landlords, and property management companies.
* **WCS for state-funded education institutions:** Up to £2,000 per chargepoint socket, for up to 40 sockets.

### How to apply for domestic grants

For domestic grants (renters/flat owners, on-street parking), the customer applies for the grant themselves via the GOV.UK eligibility page. The installer's role begins after your application is approved. Fuse Energy is an OZEV-approved installer.

## Fuse Energy's EV charging solution

Fuse Energy can install the **Easee One** EV charger at your property. This smart charger is designed for efficiency and ease of use.

### Easee one charger specifications

* **Power rating:** 7.4 kW (32A current rating)
*   **Warranty:** 3-year warranty
*   **Connector:** Universal socket
*   **Dimensions:** H256 × W193 × D106 mm

You can purchase the Easee One charger, including installation, through the Fuse app or website for a base cost of £899. To verify feasibility for an install, you'll need to provide photos of your meter, fuse board, and a video of the proposed installation location.
